Sow the Rich Ruby Blooms of Viola Arkwright
Experience the captivating beauty of Viola Arkwright Ruby in your garden. To get a head start, sow viola seeds indoors approximately 8 weeks before your intended outdoor planting time. Barely cover these seeds with soil, as light can aid germination.
These charming violas thrive in conditions ranging from full sun to partial shade. Known for their rich ruby-colored blooms, they add a touch of jewel-toned elegance to borders, containers, and window boxes. As cool-weather plants, Violas flourish when temperatures are mild, appreciating the light of the sun more than intense heat.
With a little care, these delightful flowers will bring colour to your garden.
For successful germination, sow seeds indoors about 2mm deep and very lightly cover them. An ideal temperature for germination is around 22°C. If seeds sprout readily, transplant them. However, if germination doesn’t occur quickly, the seeds might be dormant and are likely to germinate in the following cooler season. If you see no growth within 2-4 weeks, a period of cold stratification can be beneficial.
Move the seeds to a temperature of 4°C for 6-8 weeks, then return them to a warmer environment around 10°C. Once seedlings have developed two true leaves, transplant them into 8cm pots to grow on. When planting outdoors, choose a location with humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil and water thoroughly until the plants are established.
To manage warmer temperatures, ensure regular watering and consider using mulch to keep the soil cool. Remove spent flowers to encourage further blooming throughout the cooler seasons, and enjoy their tendency to self-seed, potentially providing you with more of these lovely ruby blooms in the future.
