Companion planting: Try growing sunflowers with chives to deter aphids.

Where to sow: Outdoors where they are to flower.
Preparation: Prepare the ground by raking until it is fine and crumbly, removing any large stones.
Sowing: Sow thinly, 12mm (1/2in) deep in drills 45cm (18in).
Growing: When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 45cm (18in) apart.
For really giant sunflowers: Sow indoors individually into 7.5cm (3in) pots  at a temperature of 20-30C (68-86F). Grow on in good light, and plant out 45cm (18in) apart.
