Discover the Unique Beauty of Vintage Brown Stock

Introducing Stock Vintage Brown seeds, a distinctive variety prized for its unique bloom color and exceptional stem quality, making it a standout choice for cut flower growers and home gardeners alike. Despite its name, ‘Vintage Brown’ offers captivating rose-taupe flowers, a sophisticated and muted hue that adds an antique charm to any arrangement. This “column type” stock is designed for a one-cut harvest, producing tightly spaced florets on thick, strong, and perfectly straight stems. Expect approximately 55% of the plants to yield beautiful double blooms.

Key Features and Benefits:

  • Unique Rose-Taupe Blooms: Enjoy the unusual and elegant rose-taupe color, offering a vintage aesthetic.
  • Excellent Stem Quality: Produces thick, strong, and straight stems, ideal for cut flower arrangements.
  • Single-Stem Harvest: This “column type” stock is perfect for efficient one-cut harvesting.
  • High Percentage of Double Flowers: Expect around 55% of your plants to produce desirable double blooms.
  • Edible Flowers: The peppery, clove-like flavored flowers can be used as a unique and flavorful garnish for salads, desserts, and beverages.
  • Similar Performance to Iron Series: Known for its reliable growth and excellent stem production, comparable to the well-regarded Iron series.

Growing Information:

Transplant Recommended: Sow seeds ¼ inch deep into 128-cell plug flats 5-6 weeks before your last expected frost. Harden off seedlings before transplanting to the field or a protected structure. Space plants 6 inches apart. Trellising with horizontal support (like Hortonova) is recommended when temperatures consistently exceed 60°F (16°C) or in rainy conditions.

Direct Sow: After the last frost, direct sow seeds outdoors.

Growing Conditions: Stock is a cool-weather crop, with optimal blooming in spring and fall. Plant in full sun in well-drained, moderately rich soil. Avoid pinching plants as this will terminate the single flowering stem. Succession planting every two weeks will ensure multiple harvests. As a member of the Brassica family, stock is susceptible to flea beetles; protect young plants with row covers.

Selection for Double Flowers (Optional): While challenging, you can increase your chances of double flowers by chilling seedlings at 40-45°F (4-7°C) for 3-4 days in the cotyledon stage and selecting lighter green, oval-shaped seedlings.

Harvesting: Harvest fresh cut flowers when ⅓ to ½ of the florets on the stem are open.
