Growing Rosemary from Seed
Due to the slow and potentially difficult germination process, start your bulk rosemary seeds indoors 5-6 months before the last expected frost. Press the seeds lightly into well-drained soil in a sunny location, as light is required for germination. Maintain a consistent temperature of 65-70°F and keep the soil lightly moist using a spray bottle.
Germination can be very slow, taking up to a month, with a naturally lower success rate. Once seedlings are large enough to handle and all frost risk has passed, transplant them into light, well-drained soil in full sun, spacing them 18-24 inches apart. Rosemary thrives in drier, even stony soils.
Consider container planting, especially in regions with winter temperatures below 17°F. Once established, rosemary is relatively drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering or fertilization. Prune after flowering to maintain a healthy shape and prevent straggly growth.
Harvest fresh leaves as needed, with the best flavor just before flowering. Dry or freeze leaves for later use.
