Rose de Berne Tomato: Historic Swiss Heirloom with Aromatic Pink Fruits

The Rose de Berne Tomato is a historic Swiss variety beloved by tomato enthusiasts for its full, aromatic flavor and distinctive large, pink fruits with a subtle bluish hue. This heirloom is a must-have for those who prioritize taste and unique characteristics.

  • Large, Pink, Juicy Fruits with Full Aroma:
    • Produces large, juicy pink fruits that are easily recognizable by their slightly bluish color.
    • Offers a full, aromatic flavor that is highly prized by tomato lovers.
    • Soft skin makes them best enjoyed fresh and soon after harvest.
  • Historic Swiss Heirloom:
    • A historic tomato variety from Switzerland, with a long-standing reputation for excellent flavor.
    • Open-pollinated, allowing for seed saving and future generations of these flavorful tomatoes.
  • Best Enjoyed Fresh:
    • Due to their soft skin, these tomatoes are best enjoyed fresh in salads, sandwiches, or on their own.
    • Their delicate nature makes them less suitable for long transport or extensive storage.
  • Growing Information:
    • Type: Heirloom, Indeterminate.
    • Fruit Size: Large.
    • Fruit Color: Pink with a slightly bluish hue.
    • Flavor: Full, aromatic, slightly sweet.
    • Maturity: Rather late.
    • Sowing: Sow indoors in a light and warm room from mid to late March. Sprinkle seeds thinly on moist sowing substrate, cover lightly (2mm). Keep moist with a spray bottle and cover the container with holed cling film (remove for 2 hours every 2-3 days to prevent mold). Maintain a temperature of 20-24°C.
    • Transplanting: Once seedlings reach 10cm, provide a support rod and harden off outdoors during the day (above 5°C). Transplant into the garden bed or large tubs (at least 10 liters, well-drained) in full sun after the last frost (mid-May), with a spacing of 75cm. Choose a location protected from rain and wind.
    • Care: Water evenly. The most important maintenance is consistently removing secondary (axillary) shoots to encourage the main shoot’s development. Provide strong support rods or tomato spirals. Fertilize with a commercial tomato fertilizer for the first time four weeks after planting, and again four weeks later.
  • Harvesting and Culinary Use:
    • Harvest when fruits are fully pink and slightly soft to the touch.
    • Best enjoyed fresh to savor their full aroma and slightly sweet taste.
