Organic Red Burgundy Okra
The Organic Red Burgundy Okra is a beautiful addition to any vegetable garden, known for its striking red hues and impressive height. Developed at Clemson University, this All-American winner matures in approximately 55 days, producing attractive 5-foot plants with green leaves and burgundy stems.
Key Features:
- Days to Maturity: About 55 days
- Pod Size: Tender 7-inch deep burgundy pods
- Plant Height: Up to 5 feet tall
- Color: Deep burgundy
Originally introduced by Leo Robbins in 1983 after eight years of development, this variety won an AAS award in 1988. Originating from northern Africa, okra remains a staple in African and Mediterranean cuisine and is a culinary tradition in the American South.
Sowing Information:
- Okra thrives in heat; for short growing seasons, start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks after the last frost
- Soak seeds overnight before planting to promote faster germination
- Plant 2-3 seeds in peat pots and maintain temperatures of 80-90°F until germination occurs
- Once air temperatures consistently reach 60°F, transplant seedlings in full sun, spacing them 12-15 inches apart in rows 3 feet apart
- For direct sowing in warmer climates, plant seeds ¾ inch deep and thin plants later to the same spacing
Growing Tips:
- When seedlings reach about 4 inches tall, apply mulch to conserve moisture and control weeds
- Keep plants moist during dry periods; consider using black plastic or row covers in cooler climates to retain heat
Harvesting: Red Burgundy Okra remains tender even at full length and can be harvested at any size up to 7 inches. This spineless variety allows for easy harvesting without the hassle of prickly pods.
Seed Saving: To save seeds from this okra variety:
- Separate from other okra types to prevent cross-pollination
- Allow pods to mature fully and cut them off once they turn brown; if they begin to split, harvest immediately to prevent seed loss
- Twist the pods or use a bag to remove seeds easily
- Spread seeds out to dry for a week and store in a cool, dry place for up to 2-3 years
Growing Information:
- Latin Name: Abelmoschus esculentus
- Type: Open Pollinated, Warm Season
- USDA Zones: 5-12
- Seeds per Ounce: Approximately 500
- Planting Method: From Transplant
- Sunlight: Full Sun
- Height: Up to 60 inches
