The satiny texture of the petals adds a luminous quality, making the flowers appear to glow. Their impressive size and height create a striking visual impact in the garden.

Heirloom Variety that Self-Sows for Enduring Beauty

Poppy Deep Purple carries a legacy of beauty and reliability. Its natural tendency to self-sow ensures that once established, these magnificent poppies will grace your spring garden with their presence for many seasons to come, with minimal effort.

Direct Fall Sowing for Vibrant Spring Displays

For the best results, sow Poppy Deep Purple seeds directly into a finely textured, well-drained garden bed that receives full sun as early in the fall as the ground can be worked. Keep the soil consistently moist as seedlings emerge. Once mature, poppy plants are relatively drought-tolerant, but they will produce more abundant and longer-lasting blooms with regular watering.

Planting and Growing Instructions for Spring Success

Plant Poppy Deep Purple seeds directly in the garden in early fall. In colder climates, the seeds will naturally overwinter and germinate when the soil thaws in spring. Remember that blossoms and seed pods will be largest when plants grow in cool weather, and seedlings are quite cold-hardy. Choose a well-worked, finely textured seedbed in full sun. Sprinkle the seeds as thinly as possible or sow in rows 8-10″ apart. To aid in even spacing, you can mix the tiny seeds with dry sand before sowing. Gently rake the seeds in or lightly cover them to a depth of about 1/8″. Keep the seedbed consistently moist until seedlings emerge, which typically takes 7-14 days. If seedlings emerge too densely, thin them early. Delay final thinning to 6-8″ apart until the weather has settled in the spring. At the end of the flowering season, allow some spent flowers to form seed pods and drop their seeds if you wish for the poppies to self-sow and return the following spring.
