Seed Sowing Advice for Optimum Germination:
Seed can be sown indoors for best results, as **chilling is beneficial for germination**:
- First, soak the seeds in warm water for 10-15 minutes.
- Sow the pre-soaked seeds thinly on the surface of good quality seed-raising mix in a punnet.
- Cover with a fine layer of sieved mix.
- Thoroughly moisten the mix by standing the sown punnet in a shallow water bath, allowing moisture to wick up from below.
- Wrap the moist, sown punnet in cling-wrap or a plastic bag and place in the refrigerator (not freezer) for 4-6 weeks (stratification period).
- After chilling, remove from the fridge, unwrap, and thoroughly moisten again.
- Now, place the plant in a warm, well-lit position (avoid direct sunlight). Ideal temperatures of 15-18°C are crucial for rapid and optimum germination. You can use a heat mat if available, or a warm, protected windowsill. Note that temperatures above 18°C can inhibit germination.
- Continue to keep the soil consistently moist by misting with a spray water bottle.
- Seeds typically germinate in approximately 7-14 days after the chilling period.
