Grow Sweet and Heart-Shaped Pimento Peppers
Discover the delightful Pepper Pimento (*Capsicum annuum*), also known as the Sweet Pimento or Heart Shaped Pepper. This variety is an excellent choice for both home gardeners and commercial growers, producing heavy yields of very mild and sweet peppers.
The plants grow to a height of approximately 75 cm (30″) and bear distinctive heart-shaped fruits, typically around 9 cm (3-1/2″) long by 6 cm (2-1/2″) wide with thick walls.
These versatile peppers mature from green to a vibrant crimson red and are particularly well-suited for stuffing. Their characteristic flavor also makes them superb for preserving in oil or canning whole, allowing you to enjoy your harvest long after the growing season.
For optimal growth, start your Pimento pepper seeds indoors from mid-February to late March in a soil-less growing mix, sowing them about 6 mm (1/4″) deep. Maintain a consistent soil temperature of 21°C (70°F) to encourage germination.
Grow seedlings under bright light at temperatures between 16-21°C (60-70°F) to develop strong, stocky plants. After hardening them off, transplant outdoors in late May to early June into a sunny location with well-drained soil. Space the plants about 30 cm (12″) apart with 60 cm (24″) between rows.
Ensure good weed control and avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers. Consider harvesting at different stages of maturity to experience a wider range of flavors and textures.
Staking is generally recommended to support the heavy fruit production.
