Optimal Timing and Sowing for Cool-Season Blooms
For fall, winter, and spring blooms in regions with hot summers, sowing seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before you want to transplant them outdoors when the weather is cooler (typically late summer to early fall for winter/spring blooms) is recommended. Starting indoors is highly advised to control germination conditions, especially during hotter periods. Stratifying indoors can begin around August.
Starting Indoors: Use a fine-textured, well-draining seed-starting mix. Sow seeds 1/8 inch (about 3 mm) deep, as pansy seeds need darkness to germinate, so ensure they are lightly covered. Maintain a cool soil temperature of 15-21°C for optimal germination, which may require a cooler room or a shaded area indoors. Keep the seed-starting mix consistently moist but not waterlogged. Ensure the seeds are kept in complete darkness until they germinate by covering the seed trays with a dark plastic sheet or placing them in a dark room. Expect germination in 7-14 days under the right conditions. Once seedlings emerge, provide them with bright, indirect light, gradually increasing light intensity as they grow.
Transplanting: Once seedlings have several true leaves and the weather outdoors is suitable (cooler temperatures), you can gradually acclimate them (harden off) and transplant them into their final growing positions, spacing them about 6-8 inches apart. The mix may also include colors such as Pure Light Blue, Blue with Blotch, Pure Violet, and Pure Rose.
