Key Features of Molokhia
- Nutritious Leafy Green: Rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
- Popular in Middle Eastern & North African Cuisine: A staple ingredient in many regional dishes.
- Natural Thickener: Its cooked leaves add a unique texture to soups and stews.
- Thrives in Warm Climates: Well-suited for growing conditions.
- Fast-Growing Annual: Provides quick and abundant harvests.
Growing Your Molokhia
For best results, direct sow your Molokhia seeds after the last risk of cooler temperatures has passed and the soil is warm, typically from late winter to early spring in your region. Choose a location with well-drained, fertile soil.
Soaking the seeds in water for a few hours before planting can help speed up germination. Sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep and space plants about 12-18 inches apart to allow for their growth. Ensure consistent moisture, especially during the initial growth stages.
Molokhia is not tolerant of frost, so plan your planting accordingly to take advantage of the long warm season. Harvest the leaves when they are young and tender, typically about 40-70 days after planting.
Regular harvesting encourages more leaf production.
