Melon Home Run F1
Step up to the plate with Melon Home Run F1, an early-maturing Athena type cantaloupe celebrated for its very good flavor. This hybrid variety was a standout in our 2010 melon trials, boasting long and productive vines that can yield two main harvests in a greenhouse setting.
While the fruits aren’t huge, they are exceptionally sweet and aromatic, featuring a thick, flavorful flesh and an attractive exterior netting.
Experience True Vine-Ripened Sweetness
Growing cantaloupes at home, especially varieties like Home Run F1, allows you to harvest the fruits at their absolute peak of ripeness. The resulting sugar content and depth of flavor are unlike anything you’ll find in store-bought melons.
While melons do require some extra care, the unparalleled taste of a homegrown Home Run cantaloupe makes every bit of effort worthwhile.
Optimal Growing for a Delicious Harvest
For best results with your Melon Home Run F1 seeds, start seeds indoors or in a greenhouse mid to late April, sowing them 1cm (½ inch) deep. Transplant seedlings at the end of May or the first week of June when they are about 5 weeks old, spacing them 60-90cm (24-36 inches) apart in rows 1.5-2m (5-6 feet) apart.
Ensure a warm, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-6.8, amending with dolomite lime and compost or well-rotted manure, and providing ½-1 cup of complete organic fertilizer beneath each transplant.
Utilize black plastic mulch, cloches, or floating row covers, especially in cooler climates, to provide the necessary warm growing conditions. Consistent and ample watering is crucial throughout the growing season.
Harvest is typically in late August to early September when the ripe cantaloupe easily detaches from the vine with light finger pressure.
