Sweet and Frilly Prizehead Leaf Lettuce
Experience the fresh and delicious taste of Lettuce Prizehead. This open-pollinated leaf lettuce variety is known for its sweet and mild flavor, making it a delightful addition to any salad or sandwich. With a quick germination time of just 7 to 10 days and a maturity of 45 to 55 days, you won’t have to wait long for your homegrown greens.
Prizehead thrives as a cool-weather crop and offers resistance to the Mosaic virus, ensuring a healthy harvest. Its distinctive bright green leaves are beautifully edged with a brilliant reddish-brown, creating an attractive contrast in your garden and on your plate. The broad, crumpled, and well-frilled foliage stays wonderfully crisp and tender, offering a pleasant buttery texture.
Each 2g packet contains a generous amount of approximately 1800-1900 seeds, promising a bountiful supply.
For best results, sow Prizehead lettuce seeds directly in your garden as soon as the threat of frost has passed. Plant seeds about 1.3 cm (1/2″) deep and 2.5 cm (1″) apart, with rows spaced 45 cm (18″) apart. Once seedlings emerge, thin them to about 20 cm (8″) apart to allow for proper growth.
Prizehead prefers rich, well-drained soil and consistent moisture, especially during its growth. Being a cool-weather lover, it’s ideal for spring and fall planting. For an earlier harvest, you can start seeds indoors in late summer or early fall and transplant them into the garden once they reach 1-2 inches in height.
Leaf lettuce like Prizehead is also excellent for growing in containers – simply trim the outer leaves as needed and the plant will continue to produce.
