Lettuce Igloo
Discover the remarkable Lettuce Igloo, a quick-growing variety with excellent heat resistance that will extend your lettuce harvest. This exceptional lettuce forms cool, crispy heads rapidly, yet impressively holds its quality in the garden as temperatures begin to rise.
Its strong heat tolerance made it a standout performer in our Fordhook Farm kitchen garden during fall plantings, showcasing its adaptability to varying conditions.
Fresh Flavor and Easy Growing
Lettuce Igloo boasts a fresh green color and a pleasingly mild flavor, making it a delightful addition to any salad or dish. Sow these lettuce seeds in average soil when the weather is cooler, and for a continuous supply, sow every two weeks. Plant thinly in rows 12 inches apart, covering with just ¼ inch of fine soil.
Seedlings will emerge in 7-10 days, bringing you closer to enjoying your own homegrown crisp lettuce.
Harvesting for Best Quality
For the best quality and flavor, pick your Lettuce Igloo early in the day when the leaves are crisp, sweet, and full of moisture. Harvest butterhead types when they have formed heads and the leaves are a good size, cutting the heads below the crown. With its ability to withstand warmer temperatures, Igloo allows you to enjoy fresh, homegrown lettuce for a longer period. Store harvested lettuce in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for 5-7 days or wrap leaves in moist paper towels to maintain their freshness.
