Grand Rapids Leaf Lettuce

Experience the enduring popularity of Lettuce Grand Rapids, a beloved heirloom vegetable that has reigned as a top leaf lettuce since its introduction in the late 1800s. Known for its exceptional crispness, this variety produces an abundance of succulent, light green leaves with a delicate, frilly texture and a fine, mild taste.

Rich in Vitamins A, B, C, and K, Grand Rapids is an excellent choice for fresh, vibrant salads. Its “cut and grow again” nature allows for multiple harvests from a single planting, providing a continuous supply of fresh greens. With a quick germination time of 7-10 days and reaching harvest in about 45 days, you won’t have to wait long to enjoy its delicious leaves.

Grand Rapids is also relatively slow to bolt, extending your harvest window.

This sun-loving, cool-weather crop thrives in organic, well-drained soil. Sow seeds as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring, about 3mm (1/8in) deep in rows spaced 45cm (18in) apart. For a continuous supply, make successive sowings every two weeks. Consistent moisture throughout the growing period is essential.

Harvest by either pulling the entire plant or, for multiple harvests, by cutting leaves from the main stem at least 2.5cm (1in) above the base, allowing new leaves to sprout. To extend your growing season, Grand Rapids can also be grown indoors using soil-less (peat moss based) potting soil in a light garden or sunny window, fertilized every two weeks with a water-soluble 20-20-20 fertilizer.

Remember to tear the leaves for salads to prevent bruising.
