  • Also Known As: Flowering Kale, Ornamental Cabbage.

Growing Information:

Transplant Recommended: Sow seeds directly into cell packs 4-6 weeks before your last expected frost, covering them with ¼ inch of soil. After germination (10-14 days at 70°F/21°C), grow seedlings at a cooler 60°F (16°C) for 3-4 weeks. Harden off seedlings one week before planting outdoors. Ensure plants are set out several weeks before the typical start of your growing season to establish well for fall color.

Direct Sow: Sow seeds outdoors approximately 3 months before your expected fall frost, 2 seeds per hole, 6 inches apart and ¼ inch deep. Thin to one plant per hole.

Special Instructions: Once plants reach about 10-12 inches tall, begin removing the lower leaves. Repeat this process 3 or 4 times as the plants grow taller to encourage stem length. Using horizontal trellis (Hortonova) is recommended to support the top-heavy growth and prevent stems from bending.

Growing Conditions: Plant in full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Discontinue fertilizer application once the plants begin to develop their characteristic color.

Plant Spacing: For optimal cut flower production with suitable head size, space plants 6 inches apart. Wider spacing may result in heads that are too large.

Harvesting: Harvest kale when the head is approximately 6 inches in diameter and the stem is around 24 inches long, displaying good, rich color. Color will intensify as temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C).
