Their sturdy stems make them excellent for cutting and bringing indoors, while their compact size also makes them well-suited for growing in pots and containers, especially for cool greenhouse displays.
Specific Germination Instructions with Temperature Fluctuations
Germination: Sow indoors. Surface sow the seeds onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Cover with a fine layer of vermiculite to help retain moisture and provide some darkness. Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged. Maintain an ideal temperature range of 15-18°C (59-64°F) during the day, allowing it to drop to a cooler 10°C (50°F) at night. This fluctuation in temperature is beneficial for germination, which typically takes 22-38 days. Once seedlings have developed 7-8 true leaves, thin them out to a spacing of 30cm (12 inches) if transplanting to the garden.
Growing and Cultivation Tips
Godetia prefers a light, well-drained soil in a location that receives full sun. Water thoroughly until the plants are established, after which they become quite drought-tolerant and thrive on very little water. These plants generally require minimal attention. To prolong the flowering window, deadhead spent blooms regularly. If you wish to collect seeds for the following year, allow some flower heads to mature and go to seed. Properly cleaned and stored seeds can be sown the following season.
