Geum Red Dragon
Create a stunning display in your garden with Geum Red Dragon (*Geum quellyon*). This beautiful perennial produces masses of vibrant red, fully double flowers, each measuring 3.5 cm (1 1/2″) with uniquely wavy petals.
Held on upright stems above attractive mid-green foliage, these superb blooms are perfect for adding a splash of intense color to borders, containers, and landscaping. ‘Red Dragon’ is also an excellent choice as a long-lasting cut flower, allowing you to bring its fiery beauty indoors.
For successful growth, Geum Red Dragon seeds can be sown directly into the garden once the soil has warmed up. Plant seeds at a shallow depth of 1.5 mm (1/16″) and gently press them into the soil. Water with a fine mist and ensure the soil remains consistently moist, but not waterlogged, during the germination period.
Once seedlings develop a few sets of leaves, thin them to a spacing of 25-30 cm (10-12″) to provide adequate air circulation and room for growth. For earlier blooms, you can start seeds indoors about 8-10 weeks before you plan to transplant them outside.
For enhanced germination rates, cold stratification is recommended. Soak the seeds for 1-2 hours, then place them in a moist paper towel within a sealed plastic bag and refrigerate for 15 days before planting. Regularly remove spent flowers (deadheading) to encourage more blooms and maintain a tidy appearance.
Harvest the vibrant red flowers when they are fully open. To maintain plant vigor, division every 2-3 years is beneficial. Plant in a location that receives full sun for the best flowering.
