Nutritious Fava Bean Ianto’s
Discover the exceptional qualities of Fava Bean Ianto’s, a truly versatile variety introduced by renowned plant breeder Alan Kaupler of Peace Seeds. Selected from Guatemalan seeds, this fava bean is delightful when harvested young and green, offering a tender and tasty experience. It is equally exquisite when allowed to mature and dry. You’ll be impressed by the massive beans produced on towering 6-foot-tall plants.
Beyond its delicious beans, Ianto’s is perfect for making a light and nutty-flavored hummus. Don’t overlook the young greens, which are also tender and tasty when picked early!
Furthermore, this variety is a top choice for soil improvement, producing a significant amount of organic matter, making it an excellent green manure.
For successful cultivation, sow seeds directly in the garden in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Plant seeds about 1-2 inches deep and 4-6 inches apart in rows spaced 18-24 inches apart. Fava beans prefer full sun and well-drained soil.
Due to the impressive 6-foot height, providing support may be beneficial, especially in windy conditions. Water regularly, especially during flowering and pod development. Harvest young green pods for fresh eating or allow them to mature and dry for later use. Enjoy both the delicious beans and the beneficial greens of this remarkable variety.
