Dianthus Arctic Fire
Plant Dianthus Arctic Fire seeds to create a stunning display of long-lasting blooms with a captivating color combination of vibrant red, pink, and white (or as noted, white with a crimson eye). This mat-forming perennial features tiny green leaves and produces numerous flowers over an extended period, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens.
Its creeping ground cover habit makes it ideal for filling spaces and adding texture to your landscape. Dianthus Arctic Fire is also easy to grow, often flowering in its first year, and is known to attract beneficial bees and butterflies to your garden.
For successful growth, choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily and has light, sandy, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. You can sow seeds directly into the garden when the soil temperature is consistently above 16°C (70°F). Plant seeds at a shallow depth of 3 mm (1/8″) with a seed spacing of 1.3 cm (1/2″).
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy during the germination period. Once seedlings have developed a few sets of leaves, thin them to a final spacing of 30 cm (12″) to ensure good air circulation.
For earlier blooms, you can start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your anticipated outdoor planting time. Ensure seedlings are gradually hardened off before transplanting. Water your Dianthus Arctic Fire only when the soil feels dry to the touch, as well-draining soil is crucial to prevent root rot.
Feeding plants once per week can support healthy growth and abundant flowering. Regularly remove spent flowers (deadheading) or trim back large clusters by about one-third to encourage continuous blooming throughout the season.
