Easy to Grow as First-Year Flowering Half-Hardy Annuals

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced gardener, these Dahlias are a rewarding and relatively straightforward addition to your summer garden.
Germination Instructions for a Head Start
Sowing Indoors: Surface sow the seeds onto moist, well-drained seed compost in a seed tray. Do not cover the seeds, as light can aid germination. Propagate at a consistent temperature of 18°C. Germination typically takes 10-14 days. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, carefully transplant them into 8cm pots, being gentle with their root systems. Grow them on in cooler conditions, ideally between 7-13°C.
Direct Sowing (Unheated Greenhouse or Outdoors): These seeds can also be sown directly. For an unheated greenhouse, follow the same surface sowing method. For outdoor sowing, wait until the soil has warmed and the danger of frost has completely passed. Germination for direct sowing typically takes approximately 1-2 weeks.
Growing and Cultivation Tips for Abundant Blooms
Plant Dahlia Mixed Varieties in a location that receives full sun and offers fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil that has been enriched with organic matter and a balanced fertilizer. Pinch out the growing tips of young plants to encourage bushier growth and provide support with stakes as needed, especially for taller varieties. Water freely during dry periods. Be vigilant for blackflies and treat if necessary. To encourage continuous blooming, cut flowers regularly or deadhead spent blooms. In regions with frost, cut the plants back to ground level at the end of spring before carefully lifting and storing the tubers in a frost-free location for the next season. Propagation can also be achieved from softwood cuttings taken in spring from stored tubers or by dividing the tubers, ensuring each division has a viable bud.
