Keep the compost moist, and seedlings should typically appear within 14-21 days.

Once the seedlings are large enough to handle (always holding by a leaf), transplant them 5cm (2″) apart into other trays to grow on in cooler (but not cold) conditions. Before planting them out into their final positions, gradually acclimatize the young plants to outdoor conditions. Choose a spot with well-drained soil and space the plants 30cm (1′) apart. For an easier approach in suitable climates, you can also sow seeds directly outdoors in October, 1.5cm (½”) deep, into finely prepared, well-drained soil that has been pre-watered.
