Grow Improved Collard Champion
Discover the enhanced Collard Champion (*Brassica oleracea*, Acephala Group), a much-improved selection of the Vates type. Maturing in just 60 days, this collard produces large, dark green, cabbage-like leaves that impressively retain their springtime eating quality for up to 2 weeks longer than other Vates varieties.
Collards are also a nutritional powerhouse, ranking among the best vegetable sources of vitamin K, a nutrient beneficial for brain health. Try Champion braised with a touch of olive oil and garlic for a delicious and healthy dish.
Direct sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing them 1-3 inches apart (thin to 12-24 inches). Rows should be 18-36 inches apart. Soil temperature for germination is 55–75°F, with emergence in 5–17 days.
For a fall crop, sow June—July. To transplant, start indoors 4-6 weeks prior (May—July for June—August transplant). Provide medium fertilizer needs. Harvest leaves from the bottom up at any size; cool weather and frost enhance its flavor.
