Collard Champion
Discover the resilience of Collard Champion (*Brassica oleracea*), a hardy and frost-tolerant variety that thrives in both spring and summer gardens. This vigorous collard is widely adaptable and produces abundant harvests of large, dark green leaves with a mild, cabbage-like flavor.
Originating in Asia Minor and the Mediterranean, collards have a rich history and became a significant part of Southern American cuisine. Champion holds up well in the garden, providing a reliable source of nutritious greens.
For a spring crop, direct sow seeds 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost. For a fall crop, sow 6-8 weeks before the first fall frost. Plant a few seeds every 12 inches, ¼ inch deep, thinning to the strongest plant.
For larger plants, space them 2 feet apart. Water regularly and fertilize a few times during the summer. Harvest outer leaves when plants reach 10-12 inches tall.
A fall crop’s flavor sweetens after frost. Plants can reach 32 inches in height and benefit from staking when mature.
