Easy Indoor Sowing for a Head Start

Coleus Rainbow Mixed Colors is best started from seed sown early indoors and transplanted outside once all danger of frost has passed. Potted plants are also an option for those seeking immediate color.

Sowing Seed Indoors: Sow your Coleus seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your typical last frost date. Sow the seeds shallowly, lightly covering them with fine seed-starting soil. Maintain consistent soil moisture and a temperature between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Providing bottom heat can be beneficial for coleus germination. Seedlings typically emerge in 12-21 days. Once seedlings appear, ensure they receive plenty of light by placing them on a sunny windowsill or under fluorescent plant lights (3-4 inches beneath the lights, on for 16 hours per day and off for 8 hours at night). Raise the lights as the plants grow taller. Thin to one seedling per cell when they develop two sets of true leaves. Seedlings require minimal fertilization; feed them when they are 3-4 weeks old using a starter solution (half-strength of a complete indoor houseplant food) according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
