Organic Chinese Cabbage Bilko F1

Discover Chinese Cabbage Bilko Organic F1 (*Brassica rapa*), a USDA Certified Organic, full-size F1 hybrid variety prized for its reliable performance and excellent quality. Compared to the Rubicon variety, Bilko produces slightly larger heads, reaching approximately 12 inches.

It also features a darker green color and matures a couple of days later. With its wide adaptability and slow-bolting nature, Bilko is a superb choice for both spring and fall cultivation. The heads offer a good, mild, and sweet flavor.

High Disease Resistance for Healthy Growth

Bilko Organic F1 exhibits high resistance to significant diseases affecting Chinese cabbage, including:

  • Club Root: High Resistance
  • Fusarium Yellows: High Resistance

By choosing Bilko, you’re selecting a robust variety with built-in protection against common soil-borne pathogens.

Optimal Culture for Spring and Fall Harvests

Spring-Planted Crops: Sow 2 seeds per cell, ¼ inch deep in 72-cell plug trays. Maintain soil temperatures above 75°F (24°C) until germination, then reduce air temperature to 60–70°F (16–21°C). Transplant seedlings outdoors in 3–5 weeks, around the last frost date, being careful not to disturb the roots. Water plants thoroughly after transplanting.

Summer/Fall-Planted Crops: Start seedlings as described above in mid to late June or direct seed from late May to mid-July.

Direct Seeding Instructions

Sow 3–4 seeds every 12–18 inches (thin to one plant) in rows 18-30 inches apart from late May to mid-July.

Preventing Bolting

Chinese cabbage thrives in the gradually decreasing day length and cooler temperatures of late summer. For successful spring and early summer crops, ensure you wait until after the last frost to transplant or direct seed.

Young plants are susceptible to premature bolting if exposed to frost or more than a week of nighttime temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

Harvest and Storage

Harvest Bilko Organic F1 Chinese cabbage when the heads are very firm.

For storage, trimmed heads wrapped in newspaper will keep for 1–2 months in a near-freezing, humid cooler or a root cellar.
