Golden Self Blanching Celery
Discover the reliable quality of Celery Golden Self Blanching, a well-known heirloom variety prized for its thick, crisp, and juicy stalks. This celery offers a delicious taste without the strings or bitter flavor found in some other varieties.
The deeply ribbed stems grow to an impressive 18 to 23 inches in height and possess the desirable trait of being self-blanching, meaning they naturally pale as they grow, resulting in tender, milder stalks.
This excellent celery is a rewarding addition to any home garden.
For best results, start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost, typically around July. Choose well-draining soil rich in organic matter, amending with compost or well-rotted manure. Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH (6.0-7.0).
Celery seeds need light to germinate, so sow them on the surface of the soil and keep them moist at 68-75°F. Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 2-3 inches tall, spacing them 12-18 inches apart in rows 24-30 inches apart. Plant in full sun, though partial shade can be beneficial in hot climates.
Ensure consistent moisture, preferably with drip irrigation at the base of the plants. Fertilize before planting and side-dress every 3-4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
Harvest stalks when they are 8-12 inches tall, starting with the outer ones.
