Lime Green Blooms with Bells of Ireland
Add a touch of architectural elegance to your garden with Bells of Ireland (*Moluccella laevis*). This annual produces long, graceful stems adorned with distinctive lime green, bell-like calyces that encircle the stems, creating a visually striking display throughout the summer.
The actual flowers, nestled inside these “bells,” are small and fragrant. Beloved by florists, Bells of Ireland are excellent for adding unique texture and color to fresh cut flower arrangements and also dry beautifully for long-lasting displays.
For successful cultivation, especially in warmer climates like Abu Dhabi, providing the right conditions is key. Bells of Ireland thrive best in partial to full sun, but in intense heat, afternoon shade is crucial to prevent stress. Ensure the soil is very well-draining; amend heavy soil with sand or compost.
Water regularly, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings to avoid overwatering. For germination, remember that the seeds require light. When starting indoors 6-8 weeks before the cooler planting season, sow seeds lightly on the surface of the compost and keep the seedbed moist at a cool to moderate temperature (15-21°C or 60-70°F). Direct sowing can also be attempted in late autumn or early winter.
Germination can be somewhat erratic, so patience is needed. Expect plants to reach a height of 60-90 cm (2-3 feet), and they may benefit from staking in windy areas or partial shade. In Abu Dhabi, focus on providing morning sun and significant afternoon shade, well-draining soil, and consistent moisture without waterlogging to help these unique plants thrive during the milder parts of the year.
