Beet Winterkeeper Lutz
Discover the exceptional Winterkeeper Lutz Beet (*Beta vulgaris*), also known as Lutz Green Leaf, an open-pollinated variety renowned for its unusually large, round red roots that remain sweet and tender even when reaching up to 15cm (6 inches) in diameter.
This beet also features vigorous green tops that are excellent for bunching during the summer months.
Perfect for Winter Storage and Versatile Use
For those planning for a winter harvest, sow Winterkeeper Lutz seeds in mid-July in rich soil. In the fall, protect your crop by covering the bed to prevent freezing, ensuring a supply of fresh beets throughout the colder months.
This variety is also a great choice for producing particularly tasty micro-greens and baby leaf greens that add a wonderful touch to salad mixes. However, its standout feature is its exceptional cold tolerance and suitability as a reliable winter storage beet.
Easy to Grow for a Late Season Harvest
Plant your Winterkeeper Lutz beet seeds for an easy and rewarding gardening experience. Direct sow from late April to mid-July, ensuring the soil is not too cold for germination (optimal temperature 10-26°C or 50-80°F).
Seeds typically germinate in 5-12 days. Sow seeds 1cm (½ inch) deep, 5-10cm (2-4 inches) apart in rows 30-45cm (12-18 inches) apart. For uniform root development, thin seedlings to 7-15cm (3-6 inches) apart when they reach about 5cm (2 inches) tall.
Harvest your large and sweet Winterkeeper Lutz beets at any size, but for winter storage, allow them to reach full size. Both the roots and the nutritious greens are edible. This variety matures in approximately 60 days.
