Beet Taunus
Discover the improved qualities of Beet Taunus (*Beta vulgaris*), a hybrid cylindrical beet specifically bred for perfect slicing. These highly uniform roots can be harvested at full size or as tender baby ‘fingerling beets,’ offering versatility in the kitchen.
Taunus beets boast a deep purple flesh with minimal zoning and exhibit high resistance to cracking, ensuring a quality harvest. Plants typically grow to a height of about 30cm (12 inches).
Excellent for Slicing, Pickling, and More
Taunus is an exceptional beet for various culinary uses, including fresh slicing, pickling, and even chipping. The hybrid breeding of this variety results in uniform, smooth, and early maturing plants. Even the tops are quite tasty and can be enjoyed as greens.
For a continuous harvest, direct sow seeds in short rows starting in late April and repeat plantings every two to three weeks.
Easy to Grow for a Reliable Harvest
Plant your Taunus beet seeds for an easy and rewarding gardening experience. Direct sow from late April to mid-July, ensuring the soil is not too cold for germination (optimal temperature 10-26°C or 50-80°F).
Seeds typically germinate in 5-12 days. Sow seeds 1cm (½ inch) deep, 5-10cm (2-4 inches) apart in rows 30-45cm (12-18 inches) apart. For uniform root development, thin seedlings to 7-15cm (3-6 inches) apart when they reach about 5cm (2 inches) tall.
Harvest your versatile Taunus beets at any size, but for the best flavor, pull them as soon as they reach full size. Don’t forget that the nutritious greens are also edible. This variety matures in approximately 60 days.
