Beet Avalanche
Discover the unique Beet Avalanche (*Beta vulgaris*), a 2015 All-America Selections Award Winner prized for its pure white roots and exceptionally mild flavor. Plant Avalanche beet seeds if you enjoy the sweetness of beets but prefer to avoid the traditional earthy taste.
This variety also has no bitter aftertaste, making it delicious whether eaten raw or cooked. Avalanche is an early-maturing beet that exhibits very good uniformity for an open-pollinated variety.
Novelty for Markets and Delight for Home Gardens
These striking white beets are a fantastic way to add novelty to farm stands and CSA boxes, capturing the attention of customers with their unique appearance. Of course, they are also a wonderful addition to the home garden, offering a mild and sweet alternative to traditional red beets.
For the best crunchy texture, harvest the Avalanche beets when they reach approximately 8cm (3 inches) in diameter.
This variety also shows good tolerance to Cercospora leaf spot.
Easy to Grow for an Early and Unique Harvest
Plant your Avalanche beet seeds for an easy and rewarding gardening experience. Direct sow from late April to mid-July, ensuring the soil is not too cold for germination (optimal temperature 10-26°C or 50-80°F).
Seeds typically germinate in 5-12 days. Sow seeds 1cm (½ inch) deep, 5-10cm (2-4 inches) apart in rows 30-45cm (12-18 inches) apart. For uniform root development, thin seedlings to 7-15cm (3-6 inches) apart when they reach about 5cm (2 inches) tall.
Harvest your mild and sweet Avalanche beets at any size, but for the best flavor and texture, aim for around 8cm (3 inches) in diameter. Both the unique white roots and the nutritious greens are edible. This variety matures in just 50 days, providing an early and distinctive harvest.
