Greens and Sweet Roots with Bull’s Blood Beet
Discover the versatility and beauty of Bull’s Blood Beet (*Beta vulgaris*), a classic open-pollinated variety perfect for both baby greens and flavorful beetroot. You can harvest tender, deep red leaves for baby greens in just 30-40 days, and these leaves can be cut repeatedly for a continuous supply.
For those wanting the classic beetroot, expect maturity in 50-60 days.
A Salad Grower’s Favorite with Nutritional Power
Bull’s Blood is a top choice for salad and micro-green growers due to its particularly pleasant flavor and stunning visual appeal. The smooth, dark red leaves add an unusual texture and vibrant color to salad mixes, making them truly spectacular.
If the leaves are left unharvested, the plants will produce uniform, round, and tasty red beetroots. The deep red pigmentation in both the leaves and the root is thought to be rich in nutrients and antioxidants, establishing Bull’s Blood as a nutritional powerhouse and a “super-food.”
Easy to Grow for Multiple Harvests
Plant your Bull’s Blood beet seeds for an easy and rewarding gardening experience. Direct sow from late April to mid-July, ensuring the soil is not too cold for germination (optimal temperature 10-26°C or 50-80°F). Seeds typically germinate in 5-12 days.
Sow seeds 1cm (½ inch) deep, 5-10cm (2-4 inches) apart in rows 30-45cm (12-18 inches) apart. For uniform root development, thin seedlings to 7-15cm (3-6 inches) apart when they reach about 5cm (2 inches) tall. Harvest baby greens as needed and pull full-sized beets for the best flavor.
Both the roots and the nutritious greens are edible. This variety offers a relatively quick maturity for both its leaves and roots.
