Easy-to-Grow Cottage Garden Favorite

No traditional cottage garden would be complete without Sweet Williams, and ‘Barbienne Salmon’ is an easy-to-grow addition. Known for their sweet fragrance and beauty in the border, they are also one of the most attractive cut flowers. While technically a short-lived perennial, Sweet Williams can be successfully grown as an annual or biennial. For a low-maintenance approach, simply sow thinly in a small patch of unused garden, cover lightly (about ¼ inch deep), and enjoy the resulting blooms for cutting in about 12 months.

Germination and Growing Instructions

Germination: Sow indoors. Surface sow the seeds onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Cover with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Maintain a temperature of 18-20°C. Do not exclude light, as it aids germination. Germination typically takes 14-30 days. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into 8cm pots. Grow them on in cooler conditions. Acclimatize the young plants to outdoor conditions and plant them out when the weather has cooled, with a spacing of 30cm (12 inches).

Growing: Plant in rich, light, well-drained soil in a location that receives full sun. Ensure good drainage, as Sweet Williams do not tolerate wet soil in winter. To extend flowering and maintain plant vigor, deadhead spent blooms regularly. Propagation can be done via cuttings to maintain specific plants in your garden.
