AESCHYNANTHUS MARMORATUS “Zebra Lipstick”
Aeschynanthus is a genus of about 150 species of evergreen subtropical and tropical plants in the family Gesneriaceae. They are usually trailing epiphytes with brightly colored flowers that are pollinated by sunbirds. The genus name comes from a contraction of aischuno (to be ashamed) and anthos (flower). The common name for some species is “lipstick plant”, which comes from the appearance of the developing buds.
The genus contains a large variety of plants with differing features. Some have thick, waxy cuticles while others have much softer leaves.
Native to Malaysia and Indonesia, Aeschynanthus Marmoratus is the perfect house plant for hanging pots and baskets it is very easy to care for as long as the soil is not saturated. Dark green, glossy leaves with lighter, stripey variegation that almost glows has gained this plant its common name, the Zebra Basket Vine. The underside of the leaves have a deep purple-red colouring and give this plant a unique appearance. Long, tubular flowers with yellow – orange tips go to green with a red centre.
Bright, indirect light will encourage the best growth and more vibrant colouring of Aeschynanthus. It can handle some direct sun. This plant likes to be moist –but doesn’t want its roots to be constantly wet- in spring and summer and in winter let the top inch of soil dry out between watering. It prefers to be kept in a humid environment, making kitchens and bathrooms ideal.
For best results water from underneath with the use of a saucer to reduce the chance of root rot.
Please note that the photo is indicative, each plant has different shape and size. This plant comes in a plastic hanging pot.
