For some, growing celery from seed feels intimidating, partly because celery seeds are slow to germinate, taking up to 3 weeks in some cases. However, with a bit of knowledge about the celery plant’s basic needs, growing celery from seed is very achievable for the home gardener and well-worth it for market growers.

Tendercrisp celery seeds should be started indoors in July and should be sown on the surface of your starter mix. That’s because the seeds require light to germinate. Soaking celery seeds before planting them in starter mix can help with germination rates. The surface of the soil needs to be kept evenly moist while you wait for your celery seeds to germinate. Celery seedlings, which prefer cooler weather and can tolerate a light frost, should then be transplanted into the garden about 2 weeks prior to your last frost date. It should be noted, however, that if daytime temperatures drop below 55 degrees F after the seedlings have been transplanted, it may cause bolting.

Watering on a consistent schedule is very important when growing Tendercrisp celery because they have shallow roots. If celery doesn’t get enough water as it grows, it can be come bitter and fibrous.

Tendercrisp celery stalks grow to about 12″ tall, while the entire plant will reach a height of approximately 26″.

You can harvest the stalks individually or cut the entire plant at the base.
