Sunflower ‘Russian Giant’

Easy to grow and a giant in sunflowers. Grows up to 3m (10ft) tall if given plenty of room and boasts eye-catching, huge yellow flowers up to 30cm (12in) in diameter. Excellent for the back of borders, ideal for children to grow and birds love the seeds and will feed from the flower.Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. Companion planting: Try growing sunflowers with chives to deter aphids.

Where to sow: Outdoors where they are to flower.
Preparation: Prepare the ground by raking until it is fine and crumbly, removing any large stones.
Sowing: Sow thinly, 12mm (1/2in) deep in drills 45cm (18in).
Growing: When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 45cm (18in) apart.
For really giant sunflowers: Sow indoors individually into 7.5cm (3in) pots at a temperature of 20-30C (68-86F). Grow on in good light, and plant out 45cm (18in) apart.
